Proven strategies to help your child perform their best on exam day.
Exam Day Strategies
- Read through all questions before starting
- Allocate time per section — don't spend too long on one question
- Leave 5 minutes at the end to review your answers
- If stuck on a question, mark it and move on — come back later
- Read each question twice before answering
- For multiple choice, eliminate obviously wrong answers first
- Look for context clues in comprehension passages
- Double-check spelling in written answers
- Get a good night's sleep — at least 9 hours
- Eat a healthy breakfast with protein and slow-release carbs
- Arrive 15 minutes early to settle in
- Bring spare pencils, an eraser, and a sharpener
- Take 3 deep breaths before starting
- If you feel anxious, pause and wiggle your toes — it grounds you
- Remember: one difficult question won't decide your result
- Focus on doing your best, not being perfect
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Rushing through reading comprehension
Read the passage carefully before looking at questions. Underline key words.
Confusing synonyms and antonyms
Always re-read the question. Circle whether it asks for "similar" or "opposite".
Spelling errors in written sections
Leave time to proofread. Say the word slowly in your head as you write.
Not checking grammar in sentences
Read the sentence aloud in your head. If it sounds wrong, it probably is.
Leaving questions blank
Always attempt every question. An educated guess is better than no answer.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to prepare is through consistent practice. Start with flashcards to build vocabulary, then move to timed quizzes.
